In the heart of Worthing, a historic building is preparing to open its doors once again. The Stable Yard marks the next chapter in a site that has long been part of the town’s commercial and social life.
Located on South Street, the building has served generations of Worthing residents. Long before it became a department store, the area formed part of the town’s early trading centre, where small shops and workshops operated from street-facing premises with working yards behind them used for deliveries, carts, and horses, the kind of spaces that inspired the name “Stable Yard.”
In 1947, the site was transformed into a major department store, bringing together several neighbouring buildings to create a large retail destination that became a familiar landmark for the town. In 2002 the store was acquired by Bealesand continued to serve the community for many years as a place where people met, shopped, and gathered in the centre of Worthing.
Now, the building is ready for its next evolution.
