American Express is recruiting for the role of Campus – Internship Programme – Undergraduate – AI Engineer – 2027 (UK – Burgess Hill). The intern will help build, test and scale AI-enabled solutions in Enterprise Technology Services. The role also involves learning how AI products are designed, developed, delivered and governed in a global enterprise environment.

What you’ll do

• Support the development and integration of AI and machine learning models or intelligent services under guidance.
• Help with data collection, preprocessing, transformation and management for model training, testing, validation and evaluation.
• Contribute to testing, debugging and improving AI-enabled solutions.
• Work with engineering, product, data, risk, security and business partners on AI-driven solutions.
• Document model parameters, prompts, evaluation assumptions, data pipelines, system integrations and technical decisions.
• Take part in Agile development practices and team ceremonies.
• Help ensure AI systems and AI-enabled features align with reliability, safety, governance, security and compliance expectations.

What they’re looking for

• Be currently enrolled in a Master’s degree programme in a technical subject.
• Know Python and foundational data processing technologies.
• Have a foundational understanding of computer science concepts, including data structures, algorithms, debugging, testing and problem solving.
• Understand machine learning concepts such as model training, evaluation, feature engineering and experimentation.
• Have experience using modern AI systems such as LLM APIs, prompt-based interactions, retrieval patterns or generative AI applications.
• Show awareness of responsible AI, security, governance, compliance and reliability considerations.
• Communicate and collaborate well, with strong documentation and learning agility.

Additional role information

• The internship may align to scrum teams across backend, frontend, cloud, mobile, AI and machine learning, data-oriented engineering or full-stack product development.
• You may support areas including model evaluation, data retrieval pipelines, AI agents or agentic workflows.
• The role involves learning how enterprise AI solutions are designed and delivered responsibly, reliably and securely.
